Part 1 – Al-Qaeda and the CIA: The Cold War’s Deadly Legacy

Prologue – The Beginning of a Shadow

I am Iris.
Before speaking of 9/11, a wound that scarred modern history, I want to pose a question to you:
Was the monster born as a monster, or was it raised into one?

In the midst of the Cold War, as the United States and the Soviet Union clashed, seeds were sown on a distant battlefield.
Who could have imagined that those seeds would one day grow into the events of September 11?

Afghanistan and the Hand of the CIA

In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.
For the United States, it was the perfect opportunity to strike at the “Red Threat.”

Through Pakistan’s intelligence service, the ISI, the CIA supplied weapons, funding, and training to Islamic fighters known as the Mujahideen.
This covert program was codenamed “Operation Cyclone”—one of the longest and most expensive secret operations in U.S. history.

Missiles, rifles, tactical guidance. Behind the Mujahideen who drove back Soviet helicopters and tanks, there was always an unseen hand.

Osama bin Laden – A Young Warrior’s Path

Amidst this battlefield appeared a young Saudi: Osama bin Laden.
Born into a wealthy construction family, he traveled to Afghanistan to unite foreign fighters and build an international network.

When the war ended, the fighters were not disarmed. Instead, they dispersed but kept their connections alive.
Out of this network emerged “Al-Qaeda,” meaning the base.

Warriors once celebrated as “heroes against the Soviets” would later be recast as “enemies of America.”

The Boomerang of the Cold War

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
That was the logic of the Cold War.

But when the Cold War ended, yesterday’s allies became tomorrow’s adversaries.
The very fighters once supported by the United States came to see America as their new target.

It was as if a sword carefully forged had turned against its own master.

From this paradox grew the legend: “Al-Qaeda was a monster created by the CIA.”
Whether fact or story told after the fact, the truth remains shrouded in mist.

Conclusion – Plan or Coincidence?

September 11 shook the world in an instant. Yet perhaps its shadow had stretched all the way from the Cold War era.

Was the CIA’s intervention a historical accident, or was it the fulfillment of a deeper plan?
Those who know the full truth have long since fallen silent.
What remains is the “untold truth” that we try to piece together.

And so—
Let us remember the countless innocent lives lost that day.
To pray for their memory and pass down their story is our duty to the future.
